Trauma Yamas (with Maji Avance)
Wednesdays 6:30pm CST
James Baldwin said, “To be black in America is to be in a rage almost all the time.
So how do we find ways to take back our power, regain our mental real estate and begin to create a life filled with more joy than suffering? It starts with the work of healing our nervous systems through mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, one of the foundational texts of classical Yoga philosophy, outlines 5 Yamas believed to, when practiced daily, ease the human condition of pain and suffering. “Yama” is a Sanskrit word that translates to “restraint” meaning “to reign in” or “to control.” Using these 5 principle yamas, I have created a daily practice that incorporates a trauma-informed approach to healing, that I call Trauma Yamas.
This 5-week Trauma Yamas course begins with an awareness of the unique lived experience shared by Black Americans and other POC. Each Wednesday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm CST, you will begin the practice of healing your nervous system through Pranayama (breathwork), Asanas (poses), Meditation, Self-Massage, and ultimately, Self-Mastery.
I’m excited to be your guide along this path to #MoreJoy
